Why Use Red Kaolin Clay in Shower Steamers?

You might be wondering—why add red kaolin clay to shower steamers? Well, I learned this trick after struggling with brittle or overly soft steamers that didn’t hold up well. Adding red kaolin clay makes them more durable, naturally hardens the mix, and eliminates the need for mica or artificial binders. Plus, it enhances the aesthetic with a beautiful earthy tone!

Some benefits of using red kaolin clay in shower steamers:

Strengthens the steamer structure for better durability

Adds a silky texture to the final product – It still feels rough, because it’s not made for the skin

Completely natural & mica-free

Pairs well with botanicals for an earthy, elegant look

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Rose Geranium Shower Steamers

Now, let’s dive into the fun part—mixing, molding, and decorating your steamers!

1️⃣ Mixing Your Base Ingredients – Dry Ingredients

Start by combining baking soda and red clay powder in a large mixing bowl. Make sure to sift the baking soda to remove clumps for a smooth final texture.

💡 Pro Tip: If you live in a humid environment, be cautious with moisture levels. Too much humidity can activate the fizz prematurely before you even get to mold or during the molding process.

2️. Adding Essential Oils, Polysorbate 80 – Wet Ingredients

Next, add the rose geranium essential oil and or fragrance oil to the mix. Stir well to evenly distribute the fragrance. See video for more detailed information.

Now, add the rest of the wet ingredients – Polysorbate 80. This will help bind the mix and make sure nothing sticks to the shower.

💡 Tip: If you find the mixture too dry, lightly spritz it with alcohol or witch hazel—just a little at a time!

3️. Incorporating Botanicals for a Gorgeous Look

Once your mix is evenly combined, it’s time to add the botanicals! I love using dried rose petals, lavender buds, and chamomile flowers for a delicate, floral aesthetic. In the video I also used bachelor buttons and mauve mallow root flowers.

💡 Decoration Trick: Place a few petals in the bottom of your mold before adding the mixture. This way, when you pop the steamers out, the botanicals will be beautifully displayed on top!

4️⃣ Molding & Shaping Your Steamers

Pack the mixture firmly into silicone molds. If using hard plastic soap molds, press the mixture tightly to avoid crumbling and you want a smooth bottom.

💡 Pro Tip: The mixture should feel like damp sand—holding together when squeezed but not too wet!

Let the steamers sit in their molds for 24 hours to harden completely if you’re using a silicone mold. But if you’re using a hard plastic mold, these easily come out. Watch the video to see how I do this.

5️. Curing & Storing for Longevity

Once fully set, carefully remove them from the molds and store them in an airtight container. Proper curing ensures they last longer and maintains their fizzing power.

Storage Hack: Shrink wrap them to ensure they stay fresher longer. Another method is to store them with silica gel packs to absorb moisture and keep them fresh longer!

How to Use Your Rose Geranium Shower Steamers

Using these shower steamers is so simple! Just place one in the corner of your shower where it gets lightly splashed with water. As it fizzes, the beautiful rose geranium aroma will fill your shower, turning your space into an at-home spa!

Want a stronger scent? Try placing your steamer on a soap dish closer to the water stream.
